U.S. Labor Department’s OSHA and Wage and Hour Division team up to focus on teen summer job safety at CEFGA CareerExpo

ATLANTA -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Wage and Hour Division will be promoting teen summer job safety at the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia’s (CEFGA) CareerExpo and SkillsUSA Championship. More than 150 construction-related companies will host students from across Georgia at the Southeast’s largest interactive career fair. More than 4,000 people are expected to attend.

OSHA, the Wage and Hour Division, and Georgia Tech Research Institute Onsite Consultation Service will provide attendees with information and resources to assist teen employees in thinking about safety and health issues when making decisions about what jobs to seek. Teens, parents, educators and employers will be informed about prohibited tasks, rights, responsibilities, and how to recognize and reduce the risk of injury and illness. OSHA also will assist with safety orientation training for participants in the skill competition events.

The Wage and Hour Division has developed a Web site, www.youthrules.dol.gov, to educate stakeholders about youth employment, the jobs youth may perform and the hours they may work. An interactive, Web-based “e-laws advisor,” with detailed information about youth employment laws, may be accessed at www.dol.gov/elaws/advisors.html. Select the “FLSA Child Labor Rules Advisor.”

News media are encouraged to cover the event.
