U.S. Department of Labor offers seminar on labor-related compliance issues for federal government contractors

Feb. 12 seminar to be held at Gulf Coast Business and Technology Center in Biloxi, Miss.

GULFPORT, Miss. -- The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division is offering an informational seminar to assist government contract holders and others in the Gulf Coast region in understanding and complying with the requirements of the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts, the Service Contract Act, and the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Act.

Other topics to be covered during the one-day session include determining whether an individual is an independent contractor or an employee under federal labor statutes, and understanding the responsibilities inherent in joint employment situations where two or more employers are equally responsible for compliance.

Interested individuals are welcome to attend the entire seminar or either of two sessions. The morning session will run from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. CST. It will address the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts, and the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Act. The afternoon session will run from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. CST. It will cover the Service Contract Act, and the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Act.

The Wage and Hour Division administers the Fair Labor Standards Act, which sets minimum wage, overtime pay, recordkeeping and youth employment standards; the Family and Medical Leave Act; the Davis-Bacon and Service Contract Acts, which govern federal contract prevailing wages; the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Act; the Employee Polygraph Protection Act; and worker protections provided in several temporary visa programs.
