U.S. Labor Department Recovers Over $270,000 in Back Wages for 188 Employees of a North Carolina Ambulance Services

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Magnolia, N.C.-based Coastline Care Inc., an ambulance service, has agreed to pay $270,400 in back wages to 188 employees for violation of the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The violations were found by the U.S. Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division.

“The Department of Labor is committed to protecting overtime rights and ensuring that workers receive all the wages they have earned,” said Randolph Bazemore, acting district director for the Raleigh Wage and Hour Division office.

Wage and Hour Division investigators found that the company maintained a semi-monthly pay period schedule and paid employees at an overtime rate after 80 work hours. The FLSA requires that workers be paid one-and-one-half times their regular rate of pay for all hours they work over 40 in a single workweek.

The Act also requires employers to pay covered workers at least the current federal minimum wage and to maintain accurate records of employees’ wages, hours and other conditions of employment.

The Wage and Hour Division recovered nearly $200 million in back wages in fiscal year 2004 for more than 288,000 workers. Average days to resolve a complaint during that time decreased from 108 to 92 days.

For more information about the FLSA, call the Labor Department’s toll-free help line at 1-866-4USWAGE (1-866-487-9243) or visit the Raleigh Wage and Hour Division office located in Suite 260, Somerset Park Building, 4407 Bland Road, phone: (919) 790-2742.
