U.S. Labor Department Recovers Over $169,000 in Back Wages for 393 Employees of Utah-Based Company

SALT LAKE CITY -- The U.S. Department of Labor today announced thatCenterville, Utah-based Management and Training Corporation (MTC)has paid $169,105 in back wages to 393 employees at five locations in Utah, Indiana, Ohio and New Mexico. The back wages were paid as the result of an investigation by the department’s Wage and Hour Division for compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Under supervision by the Wage and Hour Division, the company conducted a nationwide self-audit which revealed that some employees were not paid for all hours worked. Security personnel were not paid for pre- and post-shift briefing time and were not paid for interrupted lunch periods when they were working. Violations occurred at the firm’s Job Corps Center sites in Edinburg, Indiana, Clearfield, Utah, and Dayton, Ohio, and at correctional facilities in Grafton, Ohio, and Santa Fe, New Mexico.

"The Department of Labor is committed to ensuring that workers are paid all the wages they have earned," said Dean A. Campbell, wage hour district director in Salt Lake City. "In this case we succeeded in recovering $169,105 in back wages for these workers, and steps have been taken to avoid workers being short-changed in the future.”

MTC, which employs over 2,000 workers nationwide, operates 24 Job Corps Centers and six correctional facilities throughout the United States. To help promote nationwide compliance in the future, MTC provided extensive training to all managers throughout the country. “The firm took prompt action to ensure future compliance and pay back wages,” noted Campbell.

The FLSA requires employers to pay covered workers at least the federal minimum wage for all hours worked and one and one-half times their regular rate of pay for hours worked over 40 in a single workweek. It also requires that employers maintain adequate and accurate records of employees’ wages, hours and other conditions of employment.
