U.S. Labor Department Announces Compliance Assistance Seminar for Construction Industry in Southwestern Ohio

CINCINNATI, OH --

The Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor will provide compliance assistance to construction industry employers at a seminar April 12 at Associated Builders and Contractors Ohio Valley Chapter (ABC-OVC), 33 Greenwood Lane, Springboro, Ohio. Among the seminar topics are the new overtime pay regulations and restrictions on employing youth in construction. Registration opens at 8:00 a.m.

The event, sponsored by the ABC-OVC, will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a seminar on employing youth in construction, followed by a session about the minimum wage, recordkeeping and overtime pay requirements of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). An afternoon session from 1:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. will focus on the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

Reservations for the free seminar may be made by calling ABC-OVC at 937-704-0111 no later than April 8. The Labor Department’s Wage and Hour Division is committed to providing compliance assistance to construction employers to reduce the number of youth injuries and fatalities in construction; promote proper payment of wages under the FLSA; and ensure access to medical leave of absence under FMLA.

In May 2002, Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao launched YouthRules!, a public awareness campaign to educate young workers, parents and employers about the jobs that young people can perform and hours they can work. Information about the campaign and the youth employment provisions are available on the Internet at www.youthrules.dol.gov.
