UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Feb. 9 , the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 373,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 381,000. The 4-week moving average was 376,000, a decrease of 5,500 from the previous week's revised average of 381,500. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.7 percent for the week ending Feb. 2, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.7 percent. The advance number for seasonally
adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Feb. 2
was 3,429,000, an increase of 17,000 from the preceding week's
revised level of 3,412,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,418,250, a decrease
of 24,000 from the preceding week's revised average of 3,442,250.
UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 438,703 in the week ending Feb. 9, a decrease of 7,232 from the previous week. There were 396,750 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.3 percent during the week ending Feb. 2, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 4,310,456, an increase of 41,799 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.4 percent and the volume was 3,052,109. Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Jan. 26. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,364 in the week ending Feb. 2, an increase of 208 from the prior week. There were 1,220 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 186 from the preceding week. There were 20,231 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan. 26, an increase of 797 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 17,077, an increase of 39 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 26 were in Alaska (6.4 percent), Puerto Rico (5.7), Oregon (5.6), Washington (5.4), Idaho (5.2), Pennsylvania (4.5), Wisconsin (4.5), Massachusetts (4.4), Rhode Island (4.4), Michigan (4.3), and Nevada (4.3). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Feb. 2 were in North Carolina (+6,615), Washington (+3,092), New Jersey (+2,291), California (+1,549), and Virginia (+1,189), while the largest decreases were in Georgia (-5,677), Texas (-2,577), Pennsylvania (-1,530), Alabama (-1,368), and Michigan (-1,314).
