The Site Exposure Matrices (SEM) Website is a repository of information on toxic substances and chemicals present at Department of Energy (DOE) or Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) facilities covered under Part E of the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA). In addition to exposure data, the SEM Website also contains information regarding scientifically established links between toxic substances and recognized occupational illnesses.

The exposure and occupational illness information provided on this website is not complete. Facilities that have yet to be evaluated do not appear on the site. Toxic substance use at each facility is continuously being evaluated and new substances are added as they are discovered. The SEM focuses exclusively on toxic substance usage, as radiological exposure factors are evaluated by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

The displayed occupational illness links identify illnesses associated with particular toxic substance exposures. Documentation of the relationship between toxic substances and occupational illnesses in SEM are derived from records of research from recognized medical authorities maintained by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). The Department of Labor (DOL) continually updates these relationships as new evidence is presented.

This information is being placed on the Internet in an ongoing effort to obtain and organize exposure data for all covered Part E facilities and to display currently established occupational illness links. If you wish to provide comments or documentation of toxic substance use at a particular facility or scientific evidence establishing an occupational illness link, please email your comment to info@dol-sem-public.com, or select the “Submit Information” button to your right. The documentation submission process is not intended for use as a means to adjudicate individual claims for EEOICPA benefits, and information submitted for review will not be associated with any specific claim file. Individuals submitting information for review will only be contacted in the event additional documentation is required. Documentation will only be used to garner a better understanding of the different toxic substances used at covered Part E facilities and their potential adverse health effects.
