DOL and NIOSH Public Meeting in Iowa to Explain Energy Employee Program Compensation Process
BURLINGTON, Iowa — The U. S. Department of Labor (DOL) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) will present an overview of the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program (EEOICPA) at a public meeting on June 14, 2004 in Burlington, Iowa.
Payments totaling $4.4 million have been made to former workers or their survivors in the state of Iowa under (EEOICPA). Some of the payments were made to workers or survivors of workers whose claims were required to undergo a radiation dose reconstruction analysis by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as part of the claims process.
DOL and NIOSH officials will present an overview of the EEOICPA program and the radiation dose reconstruction process and explain the overall DOL claims procedure.
Iowa is home to several former AWE sites and DOE facilities, including: Ames Laboratory (Ames), Bendix Aviation, Pioneer Division (Davenport), Titus Metal (Waterloo) and Iowa Ordnance Plant (Burlington). The Burlington Assembly Plant was built in 1947 as a final warhead assembly plant. Assembly functions performed at the Los Alamos Sandia Base in New Mexico were transferred to Burlington by 1949. Burlington continued to perform the work until 1974. The Burlington Plant also made high explosive main charges for nuclear weapons from 1947 to 1974.
The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), which operated the plant, may have also performed weapons modifications, stockpile sampling, new material system testing, repairs and weapons retirement activities there. In 1974, the AEC closed out its activities at the plant and transferred all functions to the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas. Throughout the course of its operations, the potential for beryllium exposure existed at this site due to beryllium use, residual contamination and decontamination activities. Mason Hanger-Silas Mason Company was the contractor for the Iowa Ordnance Plant from 1953-1974.
