Intergovernmental Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor at the U.S. Department of State will be hosting the first-ever Intergovernmental Forum on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) on Thursday, October 25, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency in San Francisco, California. Thirteen representatives from governments of developed and developing countries that are leading sources of foreign direct investment (FDI), leading recipients of FDI, or home to multinational corporations will be represented at this event.

The issue of CSR has gained increasing prominence in recent years, with businesses becoming more aware of the influence they hold in advancing and promoting human rights, and positively contributing to sustainable development on social, environmental, and economic lines. This event will provide an opportunity for governments to more clearly define their role in promoting CSR. Participants will develop best practices, and identify areas for intergovernmental collaboration on CSR issues.

This event is closed to the public and press. For more information about this meeting, please contact James Viray, Director of the International Labor and Corporate Social Responsibility Office in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at (202) 647-3663. For media inquiries, please contact Adrienne Bory at the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, at (202) 647-1442.
