Press Statement Tom Casey, Deputy Spokesman Washington, DC December 29, 2007
Kenya ElectionsThe people of Kenya and the Electoral Commission of Kenya are to be congratulated for Kenya’s largely peaceful and orderly voting during the general elections on December 27. We have great confidence in the Commission and its chairman, and share the Commission’s concerns about reporting delays that have slowed tabulation of final election results. We await the Commission’s announcement of results as soon as possible, and any concerns about the elections should be addressed to the Commission.
We condemn the violence that occurred in Kenya as its citizens await these election results, and call on all Kenyans to remain calm while the vote tabulation process is concluded. We ask all candidates to accept the Commission’s final results and to urge their supporters to reject violence and respect the rule of law. Regardless of the eventual winners of this election, we call on Kenyans across the political spectrum to work together to advance democracy and national development.
