Press Statement Tom Casey, Deputy Spokesman Washington, DC December 17, 2007
Call for Cease-fire and Dialogue in North KivuThe United States welcomes the decision of the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo to call for dialogue to examine and resolve the underlying causes of conflict in eastern Congo. We support the proposed Conference on Peace, Security and Stability in the Kivus and will participate in this effort.
To allow all parties to participate in the Conference, the United States calls on the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and all armed groups to take necessary measures to protect the civilian population, to respect the rights of internally displaced persons and refugees, and to uphold the right of Congolese women to live in freedom from the fear of gender-based violence.
