HOMESTEAD RESIDENT PLEADS GUILTY TO ARMED ROBBERY OF HOMESTEAD STORE AND CUSTOMERS

March 27, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Julie Torres, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and Alexander Rolle, Jr., Chief of Police, City of Homestead Police Department, announced today’s guilty plea of defendant James Mitchell, age 25. Mitchell pled guilty to a three-count Indictment charging him with using a short-barreled shotgun while robbing Clark’s Multiple Services store and its customers.

On November 23, 2007, Mitchell entered Clark’s Multiple Services store, a convenience store located on W. Mowry Drive in Homestead, Florida, brandishing a loaded short-barreled shotgun. He hit a store patron in the head with the shotgun, which resulted in that person being airlifted to JMH Trauma Center. Mitchell then stole money from the store cash register and personal property of store customers and ran from the store.

Homestead Police immediately responded to a 911 call from the store. The police officer confronted Mitchell, who was still armed with the shotgun, in a field across the street from the store. Mitchell attempted to flee, but was apprehended by the officer and additional responding Homestead police officers. Mitchell’s shotgun had a 14 inch barrel and was further modified to have a metal rod protruding from its pistol grip.

Mr. Acosta commended the efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the City of Homestead Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Christopher J. Hunter.
