May 8, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Julie Torres, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Marshals Service and Fort Lauderdale Police Department, announced the results of "Operation New Jack," a seven (7) month investigation into the cocaine trafficking activities in the Fort Lauderdale area of Broward County.

Operation New Jack, which started in October of 2006, was a multi-agency investigation into cocaine trafficking activities in Broward County. According to the criminal complaint filed in this case, the thirteen defendants were responsible for the distribution of cocaine, both powder and crack, and the sale and possession of firearms. According to the charges, much of the cocaine was supplied in multiple kilogram quantities by individuals in Miami-Dade County and brought to Broward County, where it was broken down into smaller quantities and/or processed into crack cocaine for street level distribution.

As of today, ten of the thirteen defendants have been arrested on federal narcotics and firearm charges. Those who have been arrested are Samuel Tyson, Sharanda Morgan, Eddie Moore, Sheslyn Patrice Sweet, Barbara Walden, Velonie Greene, Robert White, Kevin Troutman, Leticia Doe and Dwan Doe. Defendants Tamara McCall, Chroniques Alberic and FNU LNU 2, remain at large.

During the course of the underlying investigation, five (5) search warrants were executed in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties, resulting in the seizure of approximately 2 ½ kilograms of cocaine and smaller quantities of other narcotics and packaging items associated with drug trafficking. Also seized during the course of the investigation were a total of nine firearms, including three (3) semi-automatic pistols, one (1) semi-automatic rifle, and one (1) semi-automatic pistol loaded with protective armor piercing ammunition.

Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Marshals Service and Fort Lauderdale Police Department. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Joanne Fine.
