March 30, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Julie Torres, Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Robert Parker, Director, Miami-Dade Police Department, announce that defendant Anthony Lewis was sentenced today by U.S. District Court Judge Federico Moreno to 35 years in jail on charges of trafficking in cocaine base, a/k/a/ "crack cocaine," and using a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense.

This case was the result of a cooperative federal and local law enforcement investigation into drug-related gun violence in the Opa Locka and Carol City areas. Lewis was one of four individuals convicted for conspiring and trafficking in drugs. During the term of the conspiracy, Lewis used an AK 47 assault style rifle to shoot and kill another person in furtherance of the drug conspiracy and to eliminate him as competition for the Lewis drug organization. Three other individuals were charged in the same Indictment. Co-defendants Troy Jones and Charles Smalls are scheduled for sentencing on April 17, 2007, at 9:30a.m. before Judge Moreno. The third co-defendant, Myron Jones, a street level distributor, was already sentenced to 70 months' imprisonment.

Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the ATF and Miami-Dade Police Department. This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Michael E. Gilfarb and Michael Davis.
