PILOT CONVICTED FOR FALSE STATEMENTS ON COMMERCIAL PILOT'S LICENSE APPLICATION

R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, John W. Long, Special Agent in Charge, United States Department of Transportation, Office of Inspector General, and Henry Gutierrez, Postal Inspector in Charge, United States Postal Inspection Service, announced today that a federal jury in Fort Lauderdale, Florida convicted defendant Vincent Milo, Jr., of two counts of making false statements to a federal agency in connection with his pilot's license medical certificate, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1001(a)(2). At sentencing, which has been scheduled for May 25, 2007 at 9:15 a.m. before U.S. District Court Judge William P. Dimitrouleaus, the defendant faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years' imprisonment on each count.
According to the evidence presented at trial, on January 8, 2002 and on January 7, 2004, the defendant made false statements in his Federal Aviation Administration ("FAA") pilot's license medical certificate application by claiming that he did not currently use any prescription medication, when, in fact, the defendant was on a multitude of prescriptions that could have impaired his ability to fly. Although the defendant was not employed by an airline, he did apply for and hold a commercial pilot's license, enabling him to carry passengers for hire.
Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the Department of Transportation and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Randy Katz and Special Assistant United States Attorney Marc Anton.
