MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO HEROIN CONSPIRACY AND GUN CHARGE

SHELDON THOMPSON, a/k/a “Turtle,” age 49, a resident of New Orleans, Louisiana, pled guilty in federal court to a Superseding Bill of Information charging him with one count of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute one or more kilograms of heroin and one count of possessing two firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.

The Superseding Bill of Information charges that the conspiracy, which involved 1 - 3 kilograms of heroin, began prior to October 1, 2004 and continued until September 13, 2007.

According to the factual basis, during a two-day surveillance operation, Special Agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration and New Orleans Police Officers witnessed THOMPSON make several hand-to-hand drug transactions. On April 27, 2007, THOMPSON was arrested in Orleans Parish and charged with distribution of heroin. A subsequent search of THOMPSON's residence following the arrest resulted in the seizure of approximately 106 grams of heroin, drug paraphernalia, such as digital scales and cutting tools, over $8,000 and two firearms. After being released on bond, on June 27, 2007, THOMPSON was arrested for distribution of heroin in St. Bernard Parish and has been in custody since that time.

The defendant faces a minimum of five (5) years and a maximum of life imprisonment, a $4 million fine, five (5) years supervised release. Sentencing has been scheduled for July 2, 2008.

The case against was investigated by Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation the Drug Enforcement Administration, the New Orleans Police Department and the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office. The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U. S. Attorney Emily Greenfield.
