DEPORTED ALIEN PREVIOUSLY CONVICTED OF A FELONY INDICTED FOR ILLEGAL REENTRY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
JESUS GREGORIO LOPEZ-VALENCIA, age 31, an alien who had previously been removed and deported from the United States, was charged in a one-count indictment by a Federal Grand Jury for reentry of deported alien previously convicted of a felony, announced U. S. Attorney Jim Letten.
According to indictment, law enforcement encountered LOPEZ-VALENCIA in St. Tammany Parish on December 11, 2007. Further investigation revealed that LOPEZ-VALENCIA had been previously been deported following a felony conviction for first degree forgery in Georgia.
If convicted, LOPEZ-VALENCIAa faces a maximum term of imprisonment of twenty (20) years, a fine of $250,000 and three (3) years of supervised release following any term of imprisonment.
U. S. Attorney Letten reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U. S. Attorney Julia K. Evans.
