SEPTEMBER 30, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COLUMBIA MAN CHARGED WITH POSSESSING

CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – John F. Wood, United States Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, announced today that a Columbia, Mo., man has been charged in federal court with possessing child pornography on his computer.

John Steven Green, 26, fo Columbia, was charged in a federal criminal complaint that was filed on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2008, in the U.S. District Court in Springfield. Green remains in federal custody; a detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008.

An affidavit filed in support of the criminal complaint alleges that law enforcement officers seized Green’s laptop computer from a Carthage, Mo., motel room on May 23, 2008. A forensic examination of the computer found that Green had approximately 40 images of child pornography and approximately 17 videos of child pornography saved on the computer.

Wood cautioned that the charge contained in this complaint is simply an accusation, and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charge must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Randall D. Eggert. It was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Jasper County, Mo., Sheriff’s Department.
