DEFENDANTS
GIVEN LONG FEDERAL PRISON SENTENCES
IN DRUG TRAFFICKING CONSPIRACY
May 23, 2005
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
David E. Nahmias,
United States Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, and Sherri
Strange, Special Agent in Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration, announce
that CARLOS GARZA, 35, of Marietta, Georgia, and JESUS URIBE, 36, of Atlanta,
Georgia were sentenced today by United States District Judge Beverly B.
Martin on charges of Conspiracy to Possess with the Intent to Distribute
Cocaine and Methamphetamine. According to Nahmias and the documents and
information presented in court:
GARZA was sentenced to 15 years in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised
release. URIBE was sentenced to 13 years in prison, followed by 5 years
of supervised release. Both GARZA and URIBE were convicted of these charges
on May 24, 2004. During a several month investigation, DEA identified
Garza and Uribe as members of a major Mexican drug trafficking organization
that distributed hundreds of kilograms of cocaine, hundreds of pounds
methamphetamine, and thousands of pounds of marijuana in the metro Atlanta
area. At trial the evidence established that the drugs were distributed
from Mexico via the southwest border of Texas, and then to the metro Atlanta
area. Upon arrival in the Atlanta, the drugs would be processed and packaged
for further distribution to customers in the Atlanta area.
During this investigation DEA seized approximately 161 kilograms of cocaine,
40 pounds of methamphetamine, and 1800 pounds of marijuana. DEA also seized
approximately $800,000 in cash and property, and several firearms. Other
members of this drug trafficking conspiracy previously received sentences
from between two and twenty four years in prison.
This case was investigated by Special Agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
Assistant United States Attorneys William H. Thomas, Jr., Richard Rice,
Sandy Strippoli, and Jenny Turner prosecuted the case.
