HARTFORD MAN SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON AFTER ATTEMPTING TO SELL HEROIN Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that GILBERTO RAMIREZ, 42, of Brown Street, Hartford, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Janet B. Arterton in New Haven to 60 months of imprisonment, followed by four years of supervised release. On May 1, 2008, RAMIREZ pleaded guilty to a one-count Indictment charging him with possession with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of a mixture and substance containing heroin. According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, on February 5, 2008, RAMIREZ attempted to sell 400 grams of heroin to a cooperating witness. RAMIREZ drove to a pre-designated meeting location in the South End of Hartford to conduct the transaction with the cooperating witness. Prior to conducting the transaction, however, RAMIREZ tried to leave the area in his vehicle. While attempting to leave the area and while being pursued by federal agents, RAMIREZ threw a bag containing approximately 400 grams of heroin out his car window. RAMIREZ subsequently was arrested by special agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration and officers from the Hartford Police Department. This case was investigated by a Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force, with assistance from the Hartford Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Geoffrey M. Stone. | |
