Project Safe Neighborhoods: MIDDLETOWN MAN WHO UNLAWFULLY POSSESSED FIREARM IS SENTENCED

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that TIMOTHY JACOBS, 59, of Middletown, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Christopher F. Droney in Hartford to six days of imprisonment, time already served, and three years of supervised release for illegally possessing an SWD Street Sweeper, 12-gauge shotgun.  JACOBS was incarcerated for six days following his guilty plea to the offense on February 26, 2008.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, in October 2007, JACOBS knowingly possessed an SWD Street Sweeper, 12-gauge shotgun, which was not registered to him in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.  The firearm is classified as a “destructive device” under federal law, which requires that the possession of such a firearm be registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record.

This case was investigated by the Middletown Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives pursuant to the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Christopher Mattei.

The Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative is aimed at reducing gun violence, deterring illegal possession of guns, and improving the safety of residents of Connecticut’s cities. Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.
