Project Safe Neighborhoods: WATERBURY FELON SENTENCED TO NEARLY FIVE YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR POSSESSING SAWED-OFF SHOTGUN

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that DAVID CADIZ, 29, of Waterbury, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Mark R. Kravitz in New Haven to 57 months of imprisonment, followed by three years of supervised release, for possessing a firearm after being convicted of a felony offense.  CADIZ pleaded guilty to the charge on March 14, 2008.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in Court, on January 18, 2007, CADIZ unlawfully possessed a Harrington and Richardson sawed-off shotgun in the vicinity of 356 West Grove Street in Waterbury.  On that date, Waterbury police officers arrested CADIZ after executing a search warrant at that address.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Waterbury Police Department.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Edward T. Kang and Christopher M. Mattei.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor noted that this prosecution is part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods Initiative.  This program is aimed at reducing gun violence, deterring illegal possession, sale and trafficking of guns, and improving the safety of residents throughout Connecticut.  Participants in the initiative include community members and organizations as well as federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
