HARTFORD RESIDENT INDICTED FOR STEALING U.S. TREASURY CHECKS

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that a federal grand jury sitting in Hartford has returned an Indictment charging JACQUELINE WHITE, 30, of Branford Street, Hartford, with one count of theft of government property.  The Indictment was returned on April 8 and unsealed today following WHITE’s arrest.

The Indictment alleges that, in April 2006, WHITE stole eight checks that belonged to the United States Treasury Department.  The checks had an aggregate value of $51,433.

If convicted, WHITE faces a maximum term of imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of up to $250,000.

Acting U.S. Attorney Dannehy stressed that an indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt.  The defendant is entitled to a fair trial at which it is the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

This matter was investigated by the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.   The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Susan Wines.
