BROOKFIELD MAN WHO FAILED TO REPORT $53,350 IN TIP INCOME ON TAX RETURNS IS SENTENCED

Nora R. Dannehy, Acting United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, announced that DAVID SZEN, 56, of Brookfield, Connecticut, was sentenced today by United States District Judge Mark R. Kravitz in New Haven to two years of probation for tax evasion.  Judge Kravitz also ordered SZEN to pay a fine in the amount of $7500.  On December 18, 2007, SZEN waived his right to indictment and pleaded guilty to one count of filing a false tax return.

According to documents filed with the Court and statements made in court, SZEN, while employed as the Traveling Secretary for the New York Yankees, earned substantial earnings in the form of tips that he received from players and coaches.  The tips ranged from a few hundred dollars to $10,000.  In pleading guilty, SZEN admitted that he failed to report approximately $53,350 in additional income in his individual income tax returns for the tax periods 2001 through 2005.

In addition to the fine imposed, SZEN is required to pay approximately $10,285 in back taxes, plus penalties and interest.

This case was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division.  The case was prosecuted by John H. Durham, Counsel to the United States Attorney.
