DANBURY PRISON GUARD ARRESTED ON CHARGE OF SEXUAL ABUSE OF AN INMATE

Kevin J. O’Connor, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that MICHAEL RUDKIN, 38, of Brewster, New York, a correctional officer at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, has been arrested on a federal criminal complaint charging him with sexual abuse of a ward.

RUDKIN was arrested on Tuesday, January 29, at his workplace by Special Agents of the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Inspector General.  Following his arrest, RUDKIN appeared before United States Magistrate Judge Holly B. Fitzsimmons in Bridgeport, and was ordered detained.  At a bond hearing today, RUDKIN consented to an order of detention.

According to documents filed with the Court, in late 2007, RUDKIN is alleged to have engaged in sexual activity with an inmate at FCI Danbury.

The charge of sexual abuse of a ward carries a maximum term of imprisonment of 15 years and a fine of up to $250,000.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor stressed that RUDKIN has only been charged with the referenced crime.  The defendant is entitled to have the case presented to a grand jury and, if he is indicted, he is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the Government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

U.S. Attorney O’Connor commended the investigative efforts of the agents and officers of the Department of Justice Office of Inspector General.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Anthony E. Kaplan and Anastasia E. King.
