Council Bluffs Man Sentenced On Federal Firearm Charge

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - On December 17, 2007, Thomas Shane Belt, age 36, of Council Bluffs, Iowa was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Ronald L. Longstaff to 66 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to a charge of felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney Matthew G. Whitaker. Belt was also ordered to serve three years supervised release upon release from prison, and to pay an assessment of $100 to the Crime Victim Fund.


Belt pled guilty after being found in possession of a rifle and a shotgun in Council Bluffs, on August 18, 2005, during the course of an execution of a search warrant by Council Bluffs Police Officers.


This case was prosecuted in the United States Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of Iowa as part of the Project Safe Neighborhoods initiative. This investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Council Bluffs Police Department.
