UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Nov. 24, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 488,000, an increase of 54,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 434,000. The 4-week moving average was 454,000, a decrease of 2,000 from the previous week's revised average of 456,000. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 3.1 percent for the week ending Nov. 17, an increase of 0.2 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted
insured unemployment during the week ending Nov. 17 was 4,018,000,
an increase of 301,000 from the preceding week's revised level of
3,717,000. The 4-week moving average was 3,809,750, an increase of 83,000
from the preceding week's revised average of 3,726,750. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 434,662 in the week ending Nov. 24, an increase of 13,283 from the previous week. There were 320,062 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.5 percent during the week ending Nov. 17, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 3,166,162, a decrease of 11,525 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was 1,844,196. Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Nov. 10. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,350 in the week ending Nov. 17, a decrease of 480 from the prior week. There were 1,101 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 170 from the preceding week. There were 16,356 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Nov. 10, a decrease of 1,478 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 15,881, an increase of 152 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Nov. 10 were in Puerto Rico (5.2 percent), Alaska (4.9), Oregon (4.2), Washington (4.0), Nevada (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.3), California (3.2), Hawaii (3.2), Massachusetts (3.2), and Arkansas (3.1). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Nov. 17 were in Michigan (+5,015), Alabama (+2,214), Wisconsin (+1,385), Virginia (+488), and Connecticut (+197), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-8,149), California (-4,620), Texas (-4,352), New York (-3,010), and Pennsylvania (-2,442).
