U.S. Department of Labor announces nearly $441,000 grant to assist Iowa workers affected by motor home industry layoffs

WASHINGTONThe U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $440,766 grant to assist workers affected by the closure of Winnebago Industries Inc.'s manufacturing facility in Charles City, Iowa.

"This grant will provide employment-related assistance to help these workers find new jobs with improved prospects for the future," said Deputy Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Brent R. Orrell.

Today's grant, awarded to Iowa Workforce Development, will be operated by the North Iowa Area Community College. It will provide workers of the Charles City manufacturing facility with full access to dislocated worker services. These services include skills assessment, basic skills training, individual career counseling and occupational skills training.

The motor home industry has experienced a significant decline in sales over the past four years. On June 2, the company announced the Charles City manufacturing plant's closure. Its workers were laid off on August 1.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information on National Emergency Grants, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
