U.S. Department of Labor
Certifies International Paper Company Workers for Trade Adjustment
Assistance
U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Works with
Congressman Pickering to Ensure Workers Receive Re-employment and Support
Services
WASHINGTONU.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced
603 Mississippi workers have been certified to receive Trade Adjustment
Assistance. All of the workers were totally or partially separated from the
International Paper Companys Chemical Cellulose Division in Natchez.
These Mississippi workers have persevered in the face of a
changing economy. The President and I are committed to working with Congressman
Pickering and other key members of the Mississippi delegation to put the
International Paper company workers back to work, said Chao.
Congressman Pickering has worked tirelessly to ensure these workers have
the assistance they need to succeed in careers with tremendous growth
potential.
The President signed into law the Trade Adjustment Assistance Reform Act
of 2002 (TAA Reform Act) on Aug. 6, 2002. The legislation provided for expanded
training and reemployment services, as well as health care funding and support
services, such as childcare and transportation.
Helping American workers who have lost their jobs remains a top
priority for this Administration, said Chao. The President and I
believe adjustment assistance for Mississippis displaced workers will
help to further modernize the states economy.
