U.S. DEPARTMENT OF LABOR ETA Press Release : FUNDING FOR TRADE MADE AVAILABLEBenefits Assured For Trade Program Recipients
Washington – Assistant Secretary of Labor Emily Stover DeRocco announced today the availability of $8.1 million dollars that will allow continued payment of benefits to qualified workers who became unemployed as a result of imports or the NAFTA agreement. “This Administration will do what is necessary to ensure the availability of funding so no unemployed worker covered by Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) or NAFTA TAA will suffer benefit loss while this year’s appropriations legislation is being finalized,” said DeRocco.“These programs are entitlements and people should know they can count on them.” Unemployment experienced by workers covered by these programs is higher than originally expected, causing some states to mistakenly believe they have to stop benefit payments. As a result, the Labor Department took action to allocate the needed funds so benefit payments can continue uninterrupted.
