| Media Note Office of the Spokesman Washington, DC November 3, 2006 Inaugural Meeting of the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Democracy PromotionThe Department of State will hold the inaugural meeting of the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Democracy Promotion (ACDP) on Monday, November 6, 2006, in Washington, D.C. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice established the Advisory Committee on Democracy Promotion to convene external experts to provide her and the Administrator of the Agency for International Development with advice on issues related to democracy promotion in the formulation and implementation of foreign policy and foreign assistance. During the first meeting, the Committee will discuss current U.S. policy and issues regarding democracy advancement and promotion at both the bilateral and multilateral level.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance and USAID Administrator Randall L. Tobias, Under Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula J. Dobriansky and Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Barry F. Lowenkron, along with Director of Policy Planning Stephen Krasner, will participate in the inaugural meeting. Under Secretary Dobriansky serves as the Executive Director. Dean Anne-Marie Slaughter of Princeton University Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs is the Committee chairperson. Other committee members include former U.S. Government officials, representatives of corporations, not-for-profit non-governmental organizations, public policy organizations, and academic institutions. The committee members were selected for their expertise and extensive experience related to foreign policy or foreign aid issues on democracy promotion.
The meeting, which will be held at the U.S. Department of State in Room 1107, will be open to the public from 10:00 AM – 10:45 AM, during which time Secretary Rice will speak with the group and discuss a range of democracy promotion issues. Space is limited and available on a first come, first serve basis. This session will have pool press coverage for cameras and be open for writers and still photographers.

Media representatives may attend this session upon presentation of one of the following: (1) a U.S. Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a media-issued photo identification card, or (3) a letter from their employer on letterhead verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo identification (driver’s license or passport).
