Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC July 8, 2006
Russia: Anniversary of Klebnikov MurderJuly 9 marks the second anniversary of the brutal murder of American citizen Paul Klebnikov, the former editor of Forbes Russia magazine. The U.S. Government continues to urge Russian authorities to do everything possible to find and prosecute all those responsible for this heinous act. We recognize the attention that the Russian government at the highest levels has devoted to this case and encourage it to rededicate itself to making resolution of this case a law enforcement priority. We reiterate our readiness to provide assistance to Russian authorities in bringing the perpetrators to justice. We also express the hope that the proceedings in the current appeal process concerning two of the alleged perpetrators will be fully transparent. The intimidation and murder of journalists is an affront to all who value democratic values and must not be tolerated.
