Burma - Anniversary of the National League for Democracy

As we mark the 18th anniversary of the founding of the National League for Democracy (NLD) on September 27, it is fitting that the UN Security Council has placed Burma on its permanent agenda. The Security Council recognizes that the regime’s repression of the NLD and other independent voices in Burma is having an impact on regional stability. Despite the NLD’s decisive victory in Burma’s 1990 national election, the military junta ruling Burma continues to harass and arrest NLD members and refuses to engage the democratically elected representatives of the Burmese people in a meaningful process of political reform.

The United States intends to work with other Security Council members to support the UN’s good offices mission in Burma and to seek support for a resolution calling for Burma’s release of political prisoners and democratic movement toward national reconciliation. The United States reaffirms its support for Aung San Suu Kyi, the NLD, and all those around the world who are working to promote freedom, respect for human rights, and democracy in Burma.
