Appointment of Kai Eide as New SRSG

Statement by Secretary Condoleezza Rice
Washington, DC
March 7, 2008

We welcome the appointment of Kai Eide as Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for Afghanistan. Ambassador Eide’s extensive experience and proven leadership have prepared him well to serve as the international community’s senior civilian representative in Afghanistan. In this capacity, Ambassador Eide will coordinate the efforts of the international donor community and raise the profile of the UN’s role in Afghanistan, in supporting the government of Afghanistan.

Ambassador Eide will also serve as the lead authority in the international community for implementation of the Afghanistan Compact and the Afghanistan National Development Strategy. He will direct all United Nations missions and programs in Afghanistan and work closely with NATO’s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the European Union, and individual nations contributing to development and reconstruction in Afghanistan. With improved coordination among international contributors, Ambassador Eide will help avoid duplication of effort, mobilize new resources, and bring the efforts of the international community to bear in all provinces of Afghanistan. The United States will lend its strongest support to Ambassador Eide’s efforts.
