2004

  • This 10-minute video highlights the Exodus Transitional Community prisoner reentry program in East Harlem, NY. Julio Medina, the Executive Director of Exodus, and his staff help ex-offenders returning to neighborhoods in Harlem rebuild their lives, assimilate into society, train for work, and find sustainable employment. Exodus is part of the U.S. Department of Labor's Ready4Work Initiative, a $22.5 million partnership that brings together businesses, the criminal justice system and faith-based organizations to reduce recidivism by helping ex-offenders successfully transition back into their communities. Ready4Work served as the model for President Bush's 4-year, $300 million prisoner re-entry initiative announced in his January 20, 2004 State of the Union Address.

2003

  • The Labor Department and the Small Business Administration hosted the Women Entrepreneurship in the 21st Century Conference in Philadelphia on April 3, 2003 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The webcast features Hector V. Barreto, Administrator, U.S. Small Business Administration; Elaine L. Chao, U.S. Secretary of Labor; and numerous breakout sessions.
  • Secretary Elaine L. Chao electronically signed into action the Department of Labor E-Government Strategic Plan on Wednesday. She was joined by Rep. Adam Putnam of Florida and Mark Forman of the Office of Management and Budget. Rep. Putnam is the new chair of the House Subcommittee on Technology, Information Policy, Intergovernmental Relations and the Census. Mr. Forman is the President's Associate Director of E-Government and Information Technology.

2002

  • The Labor Department hosted the Productivity in the 21st Century Conference on October 23, 2002. Featured speakers included Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao and Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan. The event featured panel discussions on topics such as "Is There a Productivity Miracle?," "Productivity and Jobs," and "The Future of Productivity."
  • The Labor Department commemorates the events of September 11, 2001.
  • On August 8, 2002, the Labor Department hosted the Northeast Regional Conference on Women Entrepreneurship in the 21st Century. The webcast includes a keynote address by Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao as well as panel discussions on various topics.
  • On February 28, 2002, Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao hosted the opening program of the 2002 National Summit on Retirement Savings, held in Washington, D.C. The Summit, co-hosted by President George W. Bush and the Congressional leadership, focused on "Saving for a Lifetime: Advancing Generational Prosperity." The Summit was a forum for identifying and encouraging new ways to promote employee retirement savings and security. The Department worked with the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans to plan the event. The Webcast features the Summit speakers including President Bush, Secretary Chao, and Federal Reserve Board Chairman Alan Greenspan.
  • On January 10, 2002, Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao hosted the Workforce Recovery Conference, which included a day-long jobs and skills fair to help put the Washington, DC region back to work. The press conference from the event included Washington, DC Deputy Mayor and City Administrator John Koskinen, Deputy Secretary of Labor Cameron Findlay, Secretary of Commerce Don Evans, Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, and Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao.

2001

  • On November 9, 2001 Deputy Secretary of Labor D. Cameron Findlay hosted the 21st annual Salute to All American Veterans. This year’s Veterans Day program awarded the efforts of 11 organizations and individuals providing a variety of programs and services funded by the Labor Department for America’s veterans, reservists, and National Guard members. Sen. Chuck Hagel delivered the keynote address.
  • On October 4, 2001 President George W. Bush joined Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced a “Back to Work” relief package to help workers displaced by the attacks of September 11th.
  • On June 20, 2001, Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao hosted the first Summit on the 21st Century Workforce in Washington, D.C. Business, labor, academic, and government leaders from across the country met to address the structural changes that are affecting our workforce and our economy. Attendees listened to a distinguished list of speakers and panelists, including President George Bush and Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, discussing the skills gap within the workforce, the demographics facing the workforce, and the future of the workforce.
