State Public Records

You may want to consider using Westlaw to locate state-related public records and filings about businesses or individuals. For example, you may need to find information about a potential witness or to determine whether or not an individual is licensed in a particular state.

For the most cost-effective means of searching state-related public records and filings on Westlaw, search in one of these new databases: Public Records Combined—Individual State (PUBRECS-XX) (where XX is the two-letter postal abbreviation for a state or the District of Columbia). Each database draws on up to 17 different sources of public records information, including

  • Bankruptcy filings
  • Corporate records and business registrations
  • Death records
  • Fictitious business name records
  • Liens and civil judgments
  • Motor vehicle records
  • People Finder records
  • Professional licenses
  • Real property tax assessor records
  • Insider stock transactions
  • UCC records

Content and coverage varies by database and by state. Please note that the scope of the PUBRECS-XX search, however, is limited to a single state. If you need to run a nationwide search, the Dossier Report Manager (DOSSIER), Person Profile Search (P-PROFILE), or the Company Records Scanner (CO-RECSCAN) may be more cost-effective.
