LLSDC’s Legislative Source Book

The Law Librarians’ Society of Washington, D.C., Inc. (LLSDC) makes available on its website a Legislative Source Book that describes and provides links to various types of legislative information. Highlights of some of the resources offered are as follows:

  • Legislative Histories of Selected U.S. Laws in Electronic Format: Lists laws by popular name as well as Public Law number. Some of the laws provided include:

  • Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005
  • Department of Commerce and Labor, an act to establish
  • Electronic Freedom of Information Amendments Act of 1996
  • Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977
  • Social Security Act
  • Quick Links to House and Senate Committee Hearings and Other Publications: Provides direct links to current individual House, Senate, and Joint Committee documents. In addition, links to other useful resources are provided, including Congressional Record Daily Digest, GPO Access Committee Materials Online, GPO Access Databases for Documents, Hearings, Prints, & Reports, and House Office of the Clerk: Committee Transcripts.
  • Electronic Sources for Federal Legislative History Documents (with Years/Congresses available): A PDF document (see note below) by Richard J. McKinney, Assistant Law Librarian, Federal Reserve Board, which lists types of legislative materials and their sources. Types of resources described include Legislative History Electronic Compilations (selected committee reports & other related documents), Popular Name or Public Law Number Index (to find the law/bill to research), U.S. Code (has brief history of amendments after each section of the Code to discern which law to research), Bill/Public Law Chronologies & Brief Summaries, and Sessions of Congress with Corresponding Debate Record Volume Numbers (1789-2006).
  • State Legislatures, State Laws and State Regulations: Provides links to state websites (in alphabetical order) as well as telephone numbers. Also provides links to other state government information and lists commercial sources of information.
  • United States Statutes and the United States Code: Provides lists of and links to selected resources divided by topic. Topics covered are Historical Outlines, Explanatory Notes and Lists, Tables from the Law Revision Counsel and the U.S. Code, 2000 Edition, and Electronic Sources for U.S. Statutes and the U.S. Code.

Note: Electronic Sources for Federal Legislative History Documents is available in Portable Document Format (PDF); to view it you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, a standard inclusion on most computers and available for free download online.
