Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI)

The Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization established in 1978, provides research, data, and analysis on health, retirement, and related economic security topics. EBRI offers the full-text of its major surveys on its website, including the annual Retirement Confidence Survey (from 1996 to current) and the Health Confidence Survey (from 1998 to current). Below are highlights of some of the other resources EBRI provides:

  • EBRI Databook on Employee Benefits: Updated regularly, it includes data from many sources to provide an analysis of how the employee benefits system works, who and what its various functions affect, and its relationship with the U.S. economy. You can download each chapter in PDF format. Other EBRI Books (from 1979 to 2004) are also available.
  • EBRI Issue Briefs: Monthly periodicals providing expert evaluations of a single employee benefit issue or trend each month, including critical analyses of employee benefit policies and proposals. Issues range in length from 16 to 28 pages and are available in both PDF and HTML format. Coverage is from 1982 to current.
  • EBRI Notes: Monthly periodicals that summarize major data releases, public policy activity, and new studies. Each issue includes a feature article on an important benefit topic, a statistical article highlighting new benefits data, and highlights of legislative and regulatory activities. Coverage is from 1980 to current.
  • Reference Shelf: Allows the user to browse a list of topics and link to mostly non-EBRI publications in PDF format. Topics include Deferred Compensation, Economics/Statistics, Employee Benefits, ERISA, ESOPs, Family Leave, Pension Plans, and Social Security.

Major studies in process include Social Security reform, individual investment education and results, health insurance coverage, health policy reform, and pension design and investment trends.
