Region 3 News Release: III-02-04-09-027-WV Date: Tues., April 9, 2002 Contact: Leni Uddyback-Fortson Phone: (215) 861-5102 REPEAT SAFETY AND HEALTH VIOLATIONS CITED FOR SOUTH CHARLESTON, WVA COMPANY; FINES TOTAL MORE THAN $105,000 SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va -- Failure to require the use of personal protection equipment for fall and laceration hazards were among the alleged repeat violations cited today by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration against Mayflower Vehicle Systems, Inc. dba South Charleston Stamping Mill, Charleston, W.Va. The citations included penalties totaling $105,825. Mayflower Vehicles Systems, Inc., which stamps out automotive frame parts from aluminum and steel plating, employs 902 workers at its South Charleston site. OSHA initiated its investigation on October 10, 2001 in response to a complaint alleging that Mayflower had not abated violations cited during a comprehensive inspection conducted between December 1998 and May 1999. According to Stan Elliott, OSHA area director in Charleston, the company was cited for 13 repeat violations, with a total penalty of $86,400; 13 serious violations, with a total penalty of $19,425; and nine other-than-serious violations, which carry no penalty. "The company's refusal to correct previously-identified hazards fosters a dangerous work environment, putting Mayflower employees at risk," says Elliott, "All of the hazards must be abated right away to ensure the safety and health of workers on the site." The company has 15 working days from the receipt of the citations to decide to comply, to request an informal conference with the OSHA area director, or to contest the citations and proposed penalties before the Independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
