Agreement Highlights Training to Combat Threats to Worker Safety and Health CHICAGO -- Medical and dental workers in greater Chicago will continue to benefit from an alliance signed today between the Chicago Medical Society, the Chicago Dental Society and Chicago area offices of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The alliance is designed to reduce and prevent some of the most common workplace injury and illness hazards in the medical profession. The two professional societies signed their first formal alliance with OSHA on Sept. 24, 2004. Under the renewed agreement, they will continue to develop training programs and materials that focus on relevant health and safety issues. They also will arrange for the presentation of workplace safety and health courses for health care workers. "This alliance will help us combat hazards through the development and presentation of programs designed to keep working men and women safe on the job," said OSHA Area Director Diane Turek, Des Plaines, Ill. "We look forward to continuing our efforts with the dental and medical societies to improve health and safety for health care workers throughout the Chicago area." Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual improvement in workplace safety and health.
