MAMMOTH CAVE NATIONAL PARK, Ky. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the National Park Service, the Chappy Corporation, and Magnum Companies, Ltd., will sign a worker safety and health partnership agreement Dec. 15, at the site of the park's major electrical renovation project. The goal of the agreement is to maintain a safe and healthy project. It is designed to identify and correct hazards that contribute to injuries and fatalities. Special emphasis will be on preventing the four primary causes of construction injuries: falls, struck-by and caught-in incidents and electrocutions. OSHA safety and health partnerships are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations and employers. "This partnership recognizes the importance of making safety and health a high priority and the commitment by all involved parties to provide workers with a safe and healthful work environment," said Ron J. McGill, OSHA's Kentucky and Tennessee area director. The renovation project calls for the overhaul of the park's existing electrical system, which was installed more than 30 years ago. The system is outdated and does not conform to national electrical codes. The new system will be energy efficient and environmentally friendly to cave formations and creatures. "The logistics with this project are enormous," said Ronald R. Switzer, Mammoth Cave National Park superintendent. "Projects inside the cave are always much more complicated than doing the same work on the surface."
