ETA Press Release: Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Report [01/24/2001]

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending Jan. 20, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 316,000, an increase of 12,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 304,000. The 4-week moving average was 336,000, a decrease of 13,750 from the previous week's revised average of 349,750.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.9 percent for the week ending Jan. 13, an increase of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's revised rate of 1.8 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending Jan. 13 was 2,401,000, an increase of 66,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,335,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,476,250, an increase of 10,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,465,750.

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 401,741 in the week ending Jan. 20, a decrease of 198,099 from the previous week. There were 328,800 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending Jan. 13, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,907,709, a decrease of 169,328 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.1 percent and the volume was 2,588,921.

Extended benefits were not available in any state during the week ending Jan. 6.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 3,245 in the week ending Jan.13, an increase of 1,046 from the prior week. There were 1,451 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 368 from the preceding week.

There were 28,195 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Jan.6, an increase of 729 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,743, an increase of 618 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Jan. 6 were in Alaska (6.0 percent), Puerto Rico (4.9), Michigan (3.9), Arkansas (3.7), Idaho (3.7), Oregon (3.7), Montana (3.6), Pennsylvania (3.6), Washington (3.6), West Virginia (3.4), and Wisconsin (3.4).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Jan.13 were in California (+11,850), Michigan (+8,182), Texas (+6,470), Pennsylvania (+5,167), and Minnesota (+5,021), while the largest decreases were in New York (-14,459), South Carolina (-10,057), Arkansas (-3,495), North Carolina (-3,111), and Kentucky (-2,356).
