Statement of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao
On August Employment Numbers
WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the following statement on the August employment situation released today:
"We enter this Labor Day holiday with the 36th straight month of consecutive job growth and a strong economy that is producing steady, consistent gains for America's workers. In August, the economy produced 128,000 net new jobs, for a total of more than 5.7 million new jobs since August 2003. And the unemployment rate fell to 4.7 percent, which is a full point lower than the average 5.7 percent unemployment rate of the 1990s."
