UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT

SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA

In the week ending May 12, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 380,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 388,000. The 4-week moving average was 401,250, a decrease of 2,250 from the previous week's revised average of 403,500.

The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.1 percent for the week ending May 5, unchanged from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.1 percent.

The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending May 5 was 2,682,000, a decrease of 26,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,708,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,680,500, an increase of 45,500 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,635,000.
 

UNADJUSTED DATA

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 322,820 in the week ending May 12, a decrease of 16,181 from the previous week. There were 231,686 initial claims in the comparable week in 2000.

The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.0 percent during the week ending May 5, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,551,024, a decrease of 143,776 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 1.5 percent and the volume was 1,855,390.

Extended benefits were available in Alaska during the week ending April 28.

Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,150 in the week ending May 5, an increase of 5 from the prior week. There were 1,035 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, an increase of 49 from the preceding week.

There were 17,111 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending April 28, an increase of 892 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 13,078, an increase of 362 from the prior week.

The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending April 28 were in Puerto Rico (7.1 percent), Alaska (5.1), Oregon (3.6), Washington (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.1), California (2.8), Idaho (2.8), Michigan (2.8), Arkansas (2.7), Montana (2.7), and Rhode Island (2.7).

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending May 5 were in California (+6,939), Texas (+1,586), Puerto Rico (+1,351), Georgia (+910), and Pennsylvania (+827), while the largest decreases were in North Carolina (-12,265), Iowa (-3,598), New York (-3,232), Michigan (-2,145), and South Carolina (-1,575).
