Statement of U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao on
Unemployment Numbers for September 2002
WASHINGTON U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued
the following statement today on the unemployment rate of 5.6 percent in
September.
Todays report shows a decline in the unemployment rate to
5.6 percent in September from Augusts 5.7 percent. These numbers are
testament to the resiliency of the American economy. The unemployment rate is
also in keeping with the long run average of 5.6 percent since 1948 and under
the 5.7 percent average for the 1990s.
The economy continues to grow, with low inflation, low interest
rates and positive productivity gains. However, more must be done.
The Administration has called on the Senate to pass several
critical pieces of legislation which will provide economic growth as well as
enhance national security. Thousands of jobs would be created if the Senate
would take action and pass the terrorism insurance bill and the energy
bill.
