Howard M. Radzely Confirmed as Solicitor of Labor
WASHINGTONU.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao announced
today that the United States Senate has confirmed President Bushs
nomination of Howard M. Radzely to be Solicitor of Labor. Radzely has served as
Acting Solicitor of Labor since January 7, 2003, and previously from June 2001
to January 2002, and as Deputy Solicitor in 2002.
I am pleased that Howard has been confirmed to ensure that the
nations labor laws are fully and fairly enforced, said Chao.
As Acting Solicitor over the past year, and previously in 2001, and as
Deputy Solicitor of Labor in 2002, Howard has proven that he is up to the
challenges of this important position.
The Solicitor of Labor oversees one of the largest law enforcement
agencies in the federal government. The Solicitor and his staff of 700 enforce
the nations labor laws, oversee litigation of the department, and provide
legal advice to the Secretary and other senior officials with regard to the
laws the department administers, including the Fair Labor Standards Act, the
Davis-Bacon Act, and the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
Prior to joining the Department of Labor, Mr. Radzely was in private
practice in Washington, D.C. concentrating in labor and employment law. He
graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvanias Wharton
School of Business and magna cum laude from the Harvard Law School. He clerked
for the Honorable J. Michael Luttig, United States Court of Appeals for the
Fourth Circuit and for the Honorable Antonin Scalia, Supreme Court of the
United States.
Mr. Radzely and his wife Lisa have one child.
