Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao Honored for Efforts on
Behalf of Hispanic Workers and Hispanic Business Owners
WASHINGTONU.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao was
honored this evening by MANA, a national Latina organization, with the 2003
HerMANA Award for her work in creating enhanced opportunities and awareness of
Hispanics in the labor force and in business ownership. The award was presented
as part of the 14th Annual Las Primeras Awards Gala.
I want to thank the MANA organization for conferring this award
upon me and for the great work you have done to encourage Hispanic women to
pursue their dreams, said Secretary Chao. Your work has helped
empower thousands of Latinas and raise the profile of working Latinas
throughout this nation.
The HerMANO and HerMANA Awards are presented to a man and woman who have
advanced issues of importance to Latinas and the Hispanic community. The awards
were introduced three years ago to recognize individuals who support these
issues.
For over 13 years MANA has recognized Latinas who have accomplished
firsts at its annual Las Primeras event. In doing so,
MANA has helped raise awareness of the accomplishments of Latinas, while
raising funds to support educational programs for Latinas across the country,
mentor girls ages 11 through 17 and advocate on issues important to the health,
education and economic well being of Latinas.
The categories for the Las Primeras Awards are: arts, business,
communications, community service, leadership, military, public service,
sciences, and sports. Awardees are recognized for significant contributions at
the national level.
