U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao and Labor
Department Officials Visit Skills Training Center for Women
Four-Day Trip of
High-Ranking U.S. Labor Officials Highlights Expanded Efforts to Strengthen
Worker Protections
BEIJINGU.S. Secretary
of Labor Elaine L. Chao and members of a high-ranking U.S. Department of Labor
delegation today visited the Practical Skills Training Center for Rural Women
in Beijing. The center trains women from rural areas of the Peoples
Republic of China for jobs in service industries and other employment
opportunities in Beijing so they can access better jobs.
Over 150 million Chinese migrant workers from rural villages all
over China have flooded cities like Beijing to look for work, said U.S.
Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao. This center provides needed skills
training so these workers can find good jobs and know their rights in the
workplace.
The Practical Skills Training Center for Rural Women trains women
between the ages of 16 and 21 years old, originally from impoverished rural
villages, to become waitresses, beauticians or computer operators. The students
who graduate from the center have had good success in finding jobs and are in
demand by Beijing employers. Since the school opened in 1998, they have trained
3283 students from many different regions in China.
