Deputy Labor Secretary Law Sees Job Growth in Healthcare, Arizona Economy

Tours TriWest with Mayor Phil Gordon

PHOENIX—U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Steven J. Law joined today with Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, and President and CEO of TriWest Healthcare Alliance David J. McIntyre, Jr. in touring one of TriWest’s expanded facilities and meeting with new employees and managers. TriWest, which currently employs more than 1000 workers, added 350 new employees in Phoenix this year and plans continued expansion for Phoenix in the near future.

“TriWest’s success is being echoed all across the country, as the economy is generating thousands of new jobs due to President Bush’s pro-growth policies,” said Deputy Secretary of Labor Steven Law.

TriWest provides health care services to military families and veterans and currently covers 2.6 million military members, families and retirees in 21 states for the U.S. Department of Defense. TriWest’s new employees include clerical hires, physicians, nurses, and health care managers.

The Department also released May’s state and regional employment numbers today; Arizona’s new employment rate of 5.1% is well under the national unemployment average.

“These job figures and other recent data show America’s economy is strong and getting stronger,” said Law.

Nationwide more than 1.1 millions jobs have been added since August, with eight consecutive months of gains, and the national unemployment rate stood at 5.6% in April, below the national average of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

In Arizona, more than 1.8 taxpayers will see their taxes decline this year under the President’s 2001 and 2003 tax relief. More than 280,000 married couples will benefit from the reduced marriage penalty, and nearly 240,000 couples and single parents will see an increase in their child tax credit.
