Question Taken at Daily Briefing of Jan. 13, 2006

Direct Assistance to Other Countries to Combat Avian Influenza

Question:   Have we provided direct assistance to any other countries to combat avian influenza?

Answer:   The U.S. allocated $54 million during the fiscal year ending September 30 to help countries, primarily in East and Southeast Asia, to combat avian influenza. This year the total is about $280 million.

Question: If so, what type and how much?

Answer:   With numbers this large, the type and variety of assistance varies according to the needs of each country.

Similar visits to the planned visit to Turkey took place last summer to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, China and Thailand. This year more significant programs are taking place and being planned for a wider variety of countries.

These efforts are all part of the worldwide program to combat this global threat.
